The hearings dealt with pesticide regulations, part of which would require that residents of an area in which pesticides are to be used must be notified of the potential use.

Doctors and pesticide victims told the House Agriculture and Livestock Committee about miscarriages and paralysis. Farmers and farmworkers talked about possibly losing their farms and jobs if the new rules go into effect as scheduled this December. Committee Chairman, Rep. Robert Saunders, DAL Grange, said he hopes to work out a compromise with the help of a special committee. He said Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower has agreed to work with such a committee.

composed of farmers, lawyers, Rural Legal Aid attorneys and farmworkers. The House committee, he said, also will draft its own recommendation on needed changes by Nov. 22. Of the 51 witnesses who testified in the twoday hearing, several said many cases of pesticide poisoning among farmworkers are not reported because of fear of retaliation. "People don't even tell us." said Rebecca Lightsey, attorney for Texas Rural Legal Aid.

"They don't tell their doctors. They don't tell their crew leaders because very often they are afraid to lose their jobs." Woodrow W. McClure Woodrow W. McClure, 66. of 4429 Ramsey, died Wednesday in a local hospital.

He had been a residential builder in the Aransas Pass and Ingleside area for many years. Surviving are his wife, Marie; a daughter. Mrs. Sharon Peck of Grand Prairie: two sons. Michael McClure of Phoenix, and Stephen McClure of Denton: and three granddaughters.

In her studies, she has found 170 official complaints of pesticide poisoning along the lower Texas Coast and the Valley in the last six years. Most of those involved aerial sprayings that drifted or fell on houses, people and animals and not crops, and led to the deaths of livestock and trees, as well as contamination of some water wells.

human death was reported as a result of overspraying, but the applicator and the farmer refused to open their files to the TDA (Texas Department of Agriculture) to see what pesticide was involved." she said. More cases aren't reported because people don't want to make neighboring farmers mad or they are not aware of the symptoms of pesticide poisoning, she said. Mrs. Rhoades said that one victim complained to her that "I was sprayed by my father-in-law and lost my baby two days later. I can't complain because he's my father-in-law." In addition, previous Department of Agriculture administrations have been less than diligent in following up complaints, Mrs.

Rhoades said. "Even the most serious infractions. such as the death of a child, large losses of livestock and deliberate unauthorized sprayings, were not pursued at all." she said, adding that the situation has changed under Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower. Rhoades said, and they will be watching for symptoms of pesticide exposure. Wednesday night, Corpus Christi businessman and San Patricio County farmer Floyd Zahn told of his 16 years of problems with pesticides drifting or being inadvertantly sprayed on his property. "I have lost livestock, trees and complete hay crops," he said, adding that it bothers him to lose the money, "but not nearly as much as the health effects I know these poisons have." He also chastized the committee, saying: "I personally resent having to come up here and take time off from work and beg for something I think is my human right." As for the Rio Grande Valley growers, Bill Weeks of the Texas Citrus and Vegetable Growers Association said the major problem is that many farms are adjacent to towns and cities. With a proposed requirement that immediate neighbors be notified of sprayings if requested, some growers could be forced to telephone up to 30,000 people at least 24 hours before aerial spraying could begin, he said. In the Valley alone, ground applications would cost about $4.6 million more than aerial applications, said Karen Richmond of the growers' association.

Yesterday, farmworker Rodolfo Perez of Mission brought the committee a petition from 411 fellow farmworkers who fear they will lose their jobs if the new regulations go into effect.
