Abstract
This chapter examines the development of the cakewalk dance and ragtime music, as well as the rush to publish sheet music by the music publishing firms headquartered in New York City’s Publishing Row. In time, this publishing center would come to be known as Tin Pan Alley, and its companies would present several new “Liza Jane” compositions around the turn of the century. Foremost among these publications would be “Good Bye Eliza Jane,” written in 1903 by Harry von Tilzer, a central figure in Tin Pan Alley. Von Tilzer’s composition descended from earlier “Goodbye Liza Jane” songs and would become a “hit” among early recording stars such as Arthur Collins and Bob Roberts. In the end, though, “Goodbye Liza Jane” songs descendant from the 1871 minstrelsy song would begin to wane in popularity, as other “Liza Jane” variants were embraced by a host of new musicians.
