What is the difference between Ironwood and Ironwood XL? ›

The Ironwood features 616 square inches of total cooking capacity and the Ironwood XL features 924 square inches. Other than cooking capacity, the features are the same.

Traeger is the main name in the game and the WiFIRE is super convenient. It's more expensive than some but should last a lifetime. I've smoke chicken thighs, ribs, and brisket so far and they've all turned out amazing. It's literally a set it and forget it unless the recipe calls for something extra.

Super Smoke is a special mode that allows you to increase the amount of smoke in the Traeger at temperature of 225°F or lower. How it works: When you set your grill to Super Smoke—which is as easy as pressing a button on the grill's control panel or app—the fan inside the grill modulates differently.

You can grill, smoke, bake (yes, BAKE), roast, braise, and BBQ.

Our favorite Traeger grill for its size, grilling and smoking abilities and overall price is the Traeger Ironwood XL. While it's silly expensive, the Traeger Timberline has all the bells and whistles.

The life expectancy of a Traeger grill is between five to 10 years if you're cleaning and caring for it as recommended. That said, Traeger offers warranties for its grills. All grills made before October 2021 have a three-year warranty. Otherwise, flat-top grills have a five-year limited warranty.

Check your pellets

Pellet quality is the biggest culprit of thick smoke. If they are holding moisture, they will not burn as hot. Pellets may be bad if they are light in color, dull, dusty, break easily, or if the bag the pellets came in has a lot of sawdust.

Should my Traeger be smoking the whole time? ›

No matter what temperature you set your Traeger grill, you'll always be smoking your food. Setting your grill between 160º and 225º F will produce the largest amount of smoke, and is thus where we traditionally consider food smoked.

Keep your grill clean so pellets burn more efficiently. Place the grill in a location out of direct wind. If temperatures are below freezing (32°F / 0°C), and your grill is compatible, you can try using an Insulation Blanket.
