Besides Ql02's live coverage, a British company will record a TV documentary on the 10-day trip that will be taken by about 35 men. "I can't find the right woman in Philadelphia or New Jersey," says Ramos, who at 32 says he is the youngest of the wife-seekers. Though its star, Vanilla Ice, was at the height of his fame, the 1991 feature flopped. "The difference," Dergarabedian says, "is that was a really bad movie." Kim Osorio, executive editor of the Source, a monthly magazine devoted to hip-hop culture, predicts 8 Mile will satisfy fans of the Dr. Dre protege. And that group, she points out, includes consumers of various races. "Even though he's white, he comes from the hip-hop community," she points out.
"He started out at the bottom and worked his way to the top because he has so much talent in terms of writing rhymes." With 8 Mile, Eminem like Elvis Presley, another white artist who found success in a black genre seeks to translate his sensitive bad-boy image to the screen. Perhaps to bolster his claim that his lyrics were never meant to be hom*ophobic, as some have claimed, the film contains a scene in which the rapper defends a gay coworker. But where Presley lost his rebel edge over a series of mediocre films, Eminem is unlikely to sacrifice street credibility in the Rocky -meets-Purple Rain drama, which is shot to moody effect by Rodrigo Prieto, also the cinematographer of Frida. Osorio, who saw the film at a music conference last month, believes it is a showcase for Eminem's rap strengths. In addition to the star's rhymes, it contains music by Dr.
Dre, Jay-Z, Nas, Rakim, Kid Rock, and Xzibit (who appears). Confidential, Wonder Boys), Oscar-winner Kim Basinger (L.A. Confidential), who plays the rapper's mother, and the critically respected Brittany Murphy (Don't Say a Word) as his girlfriend.
8 Mile is a marketer's layup: Eminem, born Marshall Mathers III, sticks to the persona familiar to fans of his enormously popular videos and platinum-selling The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Eminem Show. Eminem whose relationships with his ex-wife and mother are legendarily volatile plays an angry but virtuous loser trying to sort out personal problems and gain respect as a freestyle rapper in the city's black hip-hop culture. 'Whenever a pop star tries to cross over to film, the question is whether or not moviegoers will buy the star in the role," says Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitors Relations which tracks box-office trends. "You either match what you're already known for," Dergarabedian says, citing Madonna in Evita, "or do the absolute opposite of your image, like Dwight Yoakam, who was incredible in Sling Blade." Of course, the movie itself needs to click: "Just because you love Lance Bass doesn't mean you're going to enjoy On the Line. A movie has to hold up never looked more handsome, but he has relatively little dialogue.
"The whole thing with his mom, that didn't appeal to me so much," Osorio said, "but the scenes where he's battling against other rappers, that's what I related to. That's what I think hip-hop fans will enjoy." The 8 Mile soundtrack album, which came out last week, is apt to be huge. But for the movie to make major waves, it needs to attract moviegoers who have never bought an Eminem CD. "You need that core fan base to have a modest success," Dergarabedian says. "But to really generate a big hit, you need to reach three or four times that many people." Dergarabedian figures that if all 2.4 million people who bought The Eminem Show CD in its first three weeks of release in June showed up this weekend, 8 Mile would rack up roughly $16 million in receipts.
Respectable, yes, but Tim Allen's The Santa Clause 2 could do better, even in its second round. For 8 Mile to be huge, he says, it has to cross over like Ice Cube's Barbershop. That comedy, which opened at number one in September and has earned $71 million, has defied demographic expectations on the strength of its story and performances. It also is rated PG-13; 8 Mile is rated making it off-limits to many rap fans. "I'm sure Ice Cube brought in his fan base to see Barbershop, but if they didn't like the movie for itself it wouldn't be getting the word-of-mouth," Dergarabedian says.
"Because it's a good movie and was well-reviewed, people came back." Yet even if 8 Mile flounders commercially, awards expert O'Neill says, Eminem will likely emerge with an enhanced artistic reputation. Word is that far from being on a star trip, the rapper who turned 30 last month was a low-key presence on the set. He took his job seriously and wanted to learn. "Movie critics love to smack people around," Dergarabedian says. "If they wanted to go after Eminem, he'd be an easy target: 'Here's this overblown ego having the nerve to even try So the fact that they've been treating him respectfully in their reviews is already enough of a victory." Eminem is likely to be a major contender at next year's MTV Movie Awards, and in some people's-choice polls.
And then there are the Grammys on Feb. 23: "Because he's taken more seriously now as a multidimensional artist, The Eminem Show is gaining strength as we head into the album-of-the-year race," O'Neill says. "Bruce Springsteen and The Rising seemed preordained to win, but because Eminem is being discussed as an Oscar rival, it makes the future Grammy race interesting. He's being taken seriously."
