What happened to Hummingbird Bakery? ›

The London-based bakery and cake brand has been acquired by London based family investment office Acropolis Capital, securing the ongoing operation of its venues in Notting Hill, South Kensington and Spitalfields. The brand's sites in Soho and Islington are understood to not be part of the deal.

It played a lead role in bringing cupcakes and Red Velvet cake to popularity in the UK and continues to innovate, introducing new and exciting cupcake flavours through its 'Monthly Specials' series. The bakery also caters for customers requiring cakes and cupcakes for weddings, birthdays, events and other celebrations.

Tarek Malouf is the founder and owner of The Hummingbird Bakery, an American-style bakery founded in London's Notting Hill in 2004 to bring the authentic taste of American home baking to the UK.

Eat your cupcakes or cakes within 24 hours of purchase. If it contains cream or has a custard topping, eat immediately after purchase. We don't put preservatives in our cakes so the sponge will dry out a little and frosting will harden slightly and deepen in colour over time.

Created in Jamaica where the dessert is called the doctor bird cake (or Dr. Bird cake), it is named after the island's national bird, the scissors-tail hummingbird (locally known as the doctor bird).

Our sweet story

We are Hummingbird Bakery and we love baking cakes, bakes and desserts. With this pure, sweet sentiment, we founded our company and opened our first American-style bakery in Notting Hill, 2004. And so arrived the authentic taste of fresh, American home baking in London.

This leads us to the Hummingbird Cake, which was first submitted to Southern Living in 1978 by Mrs. L.H. Wiggins of Greensboro, North Carolina, and has become the magazine's most popular recipe since.

Founded by Drew & Erica Gilmour, we're a small mighty team bound by our shared passion for the sweet, chocolatey good stuff. We love to make, share, and most importantly, eat chocolate.

After Ace of Cakes ended, Duff moved to Los Angeles to open Charm City Cakes West. But when he closed the location in 2022 after 10 years, he stayed in California. (The original Maryland location still makes and delivers cakes around the country.)

As of 2023, Daisy Cakes is still in operation, selling jarred, four-layered, and seasonal cakes online.

Since then, the shop grew in popularity and four more locations across the GTA were introduced. It wasn't until COVID-19 hit that the bakery had to close down four out of their five locations, leaving their storefront near Yonge and King in operation.
