A common misconception is that the Sloop is faster than the Brigantine upwind. This is in fact not true, as upwind the Brigantine is the fastest, followed by the Sloop and then the Galleon.

The sloops are definitely more maneuverable and can turn through the wind easier, but it seems like galleons can still outrun a sloop in most situations.

Galleon is faster if they have wind behind their sails. If you're in a sloop go against the wind and you'll outrun them. Well a galleon has 3 sets of sails and a sloop has 1.... The sloop is more agile though so its easier to out maneuver the galleon.

The Brigantine sits between both ships in terms of speed. It's faster than the Galleon against the wind and faster than the Sloop with the wind. As a result, it has the most options when trying to escape battle or things like Kraken encounters.

The boats vary in what they excel at, however, here is a brief explanation. The sloop is fastest when sailing against wind. Galleon is fastest with wind.

You can also travel over shallower water than a galleon can. And if all else fails always carry a powder keg or two to drop off the back of your ship.
