Post-game player-led public prayer perfectly permissible (2024)

That’s word, we pray - MC Hammer – Cape football was pushing toward another score at Cambridge last Friday night leading 35-14 with the big bass scoreboard winding down to zero. Was it time for the sportsmanship kneel down? The answer: Guess not. But after the game there were no hard feelings; in fact, both teams joined at midfield for a “Let’s go to church” hand holding moment to give thanks and put the football game into perspective, yielding to a higher power. Jevon Currie of Cape followed by Tyuane Johnson of Cambridge led services. Anyone who has first amendment issues with prayer by public school players, remember that the spontaneous display led by players is perfectly permissible.

Bless my Sacred Heart – I know Sacred Heart University in Connecticut because Cape graduate Allie DeStasio is a 4.0 nursing student there and a member of their nationally ranked women’s bowling team. And Bobby Valentine is the school's athletic director. And I know you can see New York City from their house and that the football roster is filled with hard-nosed metro-area kids who were told they weren’t Division I level players. But at the Newark not in Jersey (that one's pronounced “Nork”), losing 10-7 to Sacred Heart on a Saturday afternoon in front of 8,000 “disappeared” ticket holders, the loss was a watershed moment of a program going over the falls and crashing onto the Division II rocks below. Delaware hosts new member to the CAA Elon at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11.The Phoenix are 1-4 and coming off a 48-14 home loss to New Hampshire in which they trailed 34-0 at halftime.

That’s what speed do – A phrase coined by Kansas City Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson a few years ago has become a rallying cry at Kauffman Stadium this postseason and somehow “That’s what Adderall do” never caught on in Baltimore. (Chris Davis slogan book). The League Championship seven-game series begins Friday, Oct. 10, in Baltimore and it is going to be a classic. I just don’t see the Royals exploiting the Orioles like they did to the California cool Angels. “Flake that crab cake, you’re done, Hon!”

Don’t be that guy! – I don’t want to be “that guy” who writes too much about field hockey, but they don’t call me Mr. Field Hockey because I can convert Protestants or corners. Just last weekend Delaware players Jacki Coveleski and Maggie Delp, both from Cape, were sticks down on the pitch at James Madison then William and Mary in a pair of victories. “Junkyard Jacki," who missed the last two games after stopping a ball with her brow, scored the double overtime game winner against JMU. Caroline Judge and Kaci Coveleski, also Cape grads, were both on the field in the 7-7 overtime period as Northeastern defeated Boston College in double overtime for their 10th win in a row. The Huskies play at Delaware Friday, Oct. 24. Izzie Delario of Sussex Tech and Cape had three assists as UMass beat Saint Francis 3-1. Maxine Fluharty of Sussex Tech had a goal as the second-ranked Maryland Terrapins defeated Old Dominion 3-1. Mary Washington felt pretty George after beating Wesley 5-0 in a CAC league opener. Jenna Steele from Cape, the team's leading scorer with 11 goals, was recently named CAC Offensive Player of the Week. Katie Kolobielski from Cape had a save and Carlee Budd from Delmar scored a goal in the game.

Snippets – Jamie Trabaudo, Polytech’s extraordinary two-sport athlete, has exchanged a verbal commitment to play lacrosse at the University of North Carolina.

Cape football will play at dangerous 1-4 Dover on Friday night as the Senators' homecoming opponent. Coaches play games one at a time but all football fans knows that Friday, Oct. 24 Sussex Tech at Cape is the downstate football matchup of the century. Limited handicapped spaces are available. A clergy pass won’t help either - the Bleachers for Preachers program hasn’t been adopted by the Cape school board.

Middle school sports are in full swing most games on Mondays and Wednesdays, except football on Thursdays.

The clearinghouse site for Delaware high school sports results and rosters is www.websites4sports.com. Many participating schools do a rinky-dink job recording their own scores either because they lost or suffer from a general lack of enthusiasm. The site no longer accepts photos after a wardrobe malfunction “cool breeze” cross-country photo two years ago. Grand Mom Rose: “In a world of infinite possibilities all things possible must happen, including not happen, so just get over it.” Go on now, git!
