Ohio abortion clinics can offer same-day services after judge blocks state law (2024)

ABORTION STORY. A NEW RULING ON OHIO’S ABORTION LAWS, MEANING THAT PEOPLE CAN NOW HAVE ACCESS TO SAME DAY ABORTION MEDICATION AND SERVICES. THAT’S RIGHT. TODAY MARKS ONE WEEK SINCE A FRANKLIN COUNTY JUDGE RULED THE STATE’S 24 HOUR WAIT PERIOD WAS NOT IN LINE WITH ABORTION LAWS. OHIOANS VOTED TO ENSHRINE IN THE STATE CONSTITUTION LAST NOVEMBER. WE GOT REACTION TO THE RULING FROM BOTH SIDES AND WHY THEY SAY THAT THIS BOTH SAY THAT THIS IS NOT THE END, A TRANSFORMATIVE DECISION. A SAD DAY FOR OHIO TODAY. GROUPS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ABORTION RIGHTS DEBATE IN OHIO PASSIONATELY WEIGHING IN ON A RECENT RULING ALLOWING CLINICS TO OFFER SAME DAY ABORTIONS IN THE STATE. IT TOOK OUT A LOT OF THE SUPERFLUOUS RULES THAT WERE IN PLACE TO MAKE PATIENTS AND DOCTORS JUMP THROUGH UNNECESSARY HOOPS. WE HAVE THESE LOCAL JUDGES IN CINCINNATI AND COLUMBUS BECAUSE THEY’RE PRO-CHOICE, PUTTING TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDERS ON SOME OF OUR COMMON SENSE LAW. LAST WEEK, FRANKLIN COUNTY COMMON PLEAS JUDGE DAVID YOUNG TEMPORARILY BLOCKED THE 24 HOUR WAIT PERIOD TO GET AN ABORTION THAT WAS IN PLACE. THIS MARKS THE FIRST RULING ON REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS SINCE VOTERS LEGALIZED AND PROTECTED ABORTION ACCESS IN 2023. CLINICS LIKE PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF SOUTHWEST OHIO SAID THEY HAD TO PIVOT QUICKLY TO SERVE PATIENTS COMING FROM AS FAR SOUTH AS FLORIDA TO GET ABORTION CARE. ON MONDAY. AFTER THE DECISION ON FRIDAY, WE WERE ABLE TO HELP SOMEONE WITH THE SAME DAY ABORTION SERVICE THAT WAS FROM OUT OF STATE THAT WOULD HAVE HAD TO STAY OVER. SO IT’S SAVING PATIENTS MONEY. IT’S PROVIDING THE CARE THEY NEED AND DESERVE RIGHT TO LIFE. ORGANIZERS SAY IT’S A TRAGEDY THAT’S HURTING CERTAIN COMMUNITIES WHERE ALL THE PLANNED PARENTHOOD IS LOCATED. THEY’RE NOT LOCATED IN THE RICH, WHITE SUBURBS. THEY’RE LOCATED IN URBAN AREAS TARGETING MINORITY POPULATIONS. PEOPLE OF COLOR. TODAY, GOVERNOR DEWINE, WHO CALLS THE PREVIOUS 24 HOUR WAIT PERIOD REASONABLE SPLITTING HAIRS ON THE DEBATE. SO AGAIN, THAT MATTER WAS IN THE COURTS, AND IT WAS GOING TO BE APPEALED. AND WE’LL SEE WHERE WE END UP WHEN THE COURTS MAKE THEIR FINAL DECISION. WELL, THE RULING BY JUDGE YOUNG HAS ALSO PAUSED THE REQUIREMENT THAT DOCTORS GIVE CERTAIN INFORMATION TO THE PATIENT, INCLUDIN

Last November, Ohioans voted to protect access to abortion, enshrining the right into the state's constitution.

Ohio's previous, more restrictive abortion laws required two in-person appointments with a 24-hour waiting period in between to get abortion medication or undergo a procedure.

Last week, a judge in the Columbus area blocked enforcement of that law, saying it goes against the constitution.

"We are so proud and so pleased with this ruling," CEO of Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Nan Whaley said. "It's what the voters in November called for, not by a small margin, mind you, by a 13 point margin."

Michael Gonidakis with Right to Life said he was disappointed with the judge's ruling.

"It's a sad day for Ohio but we're going to continue to fight and we believe the Ohio Supreme Court is going to reverse a lot of this," Gonidakis said.
